COMPOST TRIAL 2024 - The Results are in!

At our Summer Show Doug Reade’s compost trial received a lot of interest, and we are pleased to include the results on the link below.  He worked extremely hard to achieve a balanced and fair trial to see which no- or low-peat composts – all of them readily available – stood up to growing plants well. Notable was the effect on these plants of regular feeding, since the soils themselves did not produce such good results without.  We would like to thank him for this trial done on behalf of OHS.

Summer Show - Thank You

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Summer Show on 13th & 14th July, whether by visiting or entering the classes.  It was a great success with just over 450 entries and many people came along to see the wealth of talent that had been entered into the competition.

Please visit the Gallery page to see more pictures of the show.

Congratulations David!

The Town Council presented David Wilkinson the Community Award  at the Annual Town Meeting on 30th May. These awards recognise and appreciate the unsung heroes among us, who contribute to the betterment of our community, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of others.

These are the reasons that David was nominated:

Oundle Horticultural Society

David Wilkinson, Chair of OHS until Feb 2024

The OHS would like to nominate David Wilkinson for a Community Award for services in our local community over the years.

David is well known in the town for his dedication in bringing the two-day Summer Show to Oundle, over a period of some 30 years. He has been a member of the committee, a treasurer, and finally its Chair until his retirement this February, and we would like to show our sincere appreciation for all he has done to make this organisation such a success, and to bring this accolade to the attention of the town’s inhabitants.

Tirelessly working to shape the organization in order to provide horticultural talks throughout the season, an annual Plant Sale and the Summer Show, David has managed to convene a devoted committee who are also responsible for many tasks, while he himself has done much organising as well as hands-on work. He has devised a programme of varied and informative talks which are given by local experts throughout the season on anything from wildlife in the garden to growing cactus or fruit and vegetables; he has supervised visits to gardens; organized and grown plants for the Plant Sale; found and liaised with judges for the Show, and overseen and worked hard to provide a faultless Show every year.

The Show itself has enabled the gardeners and all creative folk in Oundle (which includes among many others, painters, cooks, embroiderers, photographers) as well as encouraging children to enter with classes in growing and presenting their art-work. This wide variety has produced a Show that has enormous appeal both to the entrants and to the viewers, who come in droves to see the results. It also draws people from the local environs. While 2020 held great difficulties, he ensured the survival of the Society in 2022, with it regaining full strength in 2023.

It may not be well-known that the Society is supported by over 300 members, called Patrons, and the very small amount paid by this membership during the year ensures a good financial base for the organization.

We hope that David’s work will be seen as a fine example of true citizenship that has genuinely benefited Oundle over the years, and has ensured that upon his retirement will continue to thrive well into the future.
