About Us

Growing in Oundle since 1904

Our Story

Oundle Horticultural Society was founded in 1904 and has held a show in the town every year since, except for a break during the war years and during the Covid pandemic

in 2020 & 2021.

In 1953, Oundle Horticultural Society merged with The Oundle & District Sweet Pea Society to form the Society that we know today.

The Summer Show

The Summer Show of Oundle Horticultural Society is held over two days in July, each year. The aim of the show is to promote interest in and enjoyment of traditional pastimes, in particular, in the growing of plants for food and pleasure, on a non-commercial basis. In addition, skills in flower arranging, cookery, handicrafts and other leisure activities are encouraged.

It started as a traditional horticulture show; however, as leisure interests have changed through the years, the summer show has introduced new classes for art, sculpture, photography, woodwork, pottery and handicraft, as well as the traditional flower, vegetable, flower arranging and cookery sections.

Whilst there is a degree of competition, the Society encourages entries from all. Many nervous, first-time exhibitors, find that their exhibits are really quite good and not out of place in the show.

Judging is done by experienced and qualified judges to standards as set by the Royal Horticultural Society and Women's Institute and the spectacle seen by the public is always appreciated. Prize monies are awarded for all classes and cups are offered for particular exhibits of merit

Evening Talks

In the 1980s, the Society began arranging evening meetings at which speakers were invited to give talks on a wide range of mainly horticultural subjects. With just a short break in the 1990s, these talks have continued to give our patrons and visitors a pleasant evening out, through the darker months, from October to May. To see our programme of talks, please go to the Events page.
